Voices From the Field

A core part of our work happens on the ground with practitioners to find out what’s actually working in the classroom for students with disabilities and multilingual learners. We then highlight and share these best practices through our blog and live events. Read on to discover insights from our amazing community of educators.

2026

The Jeannine King S.P.A.R.K. (Special Populations Advocate, Relationship-builder, and Knowledge-Sharer) Award was established in honor of our beloved colleague, Jeannine King, who passed away in
April 2023.

Jeannine served as an Inclusive Education Specialist at the Collaborative and, prior to that, as a member of the Bronx Community Charter School community for 13 years, holding various positions in special education and leadership. She was a dedicated and passionate advocate for equitable and inclusive education for all children, generously shared her knowledge and experience with peers, and always encouraged thoughtful consideration of student perspectives and genuine relationship-building.

Jeannine began each training she facilitated by sharing a quote from Dr. Chris Emdin: “True teaching is only effective when it triggers something that lasts forever or SPARKS a desire in the student to discover more beyond the classroom.”

Through our annual S.P.A.R.K. award, we aim to honor our late colleague Jeannine King’s legacy by recognizing educators who embody the same traits and values of educational excellence and inclusion to which Jeannine dedicated herself with authenticity, generosity, and constancy. Nominations for our SY2025-2026 S.P.A.R.K. (Special Populations Advocate, Relationship-Builder, Knowledge-Sharer) Award are now open. You can preview the nomination form HERE and submit your complete nomination for a colleague or for yourself by the January 30, 2026 deadline.

Denise Saavedra

Denise Saavedra was born and raised in the South Bronx and is a proud first-generation Mexican-American and former English Language Learner. Her experiences as a student in the New York City public school system shaped a deep commitment to educational equity and to ensuring every child feels seen, valued, and empowered. Over her 10-year career in New York City charter schools, Denise has served as an ELA teacher, instructional coach, and MTSS leader — always with a focus on building meaningful relationships with students, designing culturally responsive classrooms, and helping every learner develop confidence, critical thinking skills, and a genuine love of learning. Head to our blog to learn more about Denise and her work promoting inclusive practices at the middle school level.

Angie Torres

Angie Torres grew up in Castle Hill, the Bronx, raised by a bilingual grandmother who navigated two worlds in two languages at a time when that was treated as a barrier, not a gift. That early lesson never left her. Today, as Director of Special Populations at United Charter High Schools, Angie leads network-wide Special Education and ELL compliance, literacy intervention, and professional development across three boroughs. She also serves as the network steward of UCHS’s Seal of Biliteracy program, expanding a school-based initiative into a network-wide movement that has honored more than 60 multilingual students in the last two years. Read our interview with Angie to learn from her strategic work supporting multilingual learners, including more on the Seal of Biliteracy.
