In this session, participants will explore the science of phonological awareness, decoding and the initial word recognition strands of the Reading Rope, helping us visualize and understand the incredible process of learning to
read. We will specifically focus on phonological awareness, decoding, and chaining as they work together in practice to support emerging readers become accurate, fluent, and automatic readers.
By the end of this session, participants will:
- Describe the word recognition strands of the Reading Rope and identify their importance in serving struggling readers
- Practice sight–symbol–sound relationships inherent in phonological awareness and apply understandings to an upcoming lesson
- Explore resources and technological tools for further phonological and phonemic instruction
