When students explain their reasoning, restate a classmate’s strategy, and defend their answers, they learn more math — research backs this up consistently. But purposeful math discussion does double duty: every exchange is also building the oral language skills all students need, especially multilingual learners. This session explores how to make math talk work harder in your classroom, deepening mathematical understanding while developing confident, capable communicators.
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Facilitate research-based talk moves that deepen mathematical reasoning
- Plan and orchestrate purposeful math discussions rather than leaving them to chance
- Scaffold mathematical discourse so multilingual learners can fully participate in rigorous math talk
