Unsure of how to support multilingual learners when you don’t speak their language? Then this session is for you! In this workshop, we will focus on academic, linguistic, and social-emotional learning support for MLLs (multilingual learners) coming from non-dominant language backgrounds, including, but not limited to speakers of Arabic, Bengali, Urdu and various languages from Africa (such as Wolof and Fulani). We will explore strategies for literacy and content learning and creative ways to incorporate students’ home languages into learning, especially when the teacher does not speak the language(s) of their student(s). Finally, we will also consider how to create and provide culturally relevant learning experiences for these students and connections with families and communities.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify ways to get to know and assess the needs of MLLs from non-dominant languages backgrounds in connection with their academic, linguistic and social-emotional learning
- Plan for ways to incorporate students’ home languages (of non-dominant language backgrounds) into literacy and content instruction?
- Identify strategies, materials, and community resources for culturally relevant teaching with MLLs of non-dominant language backgrounds
