Make sure you’re ready to hit the ground running once you run your lottery and begin to enroll students for SY25-26.
In the first hour of this session, participants will learn about different legal mandates and best practices around MLL/ELL identification and enrollment in NYC charter schools. There will also be time for Q&A.
The last half hour of the session will be a school spotlight that focuses on improving multilingual learner intake processes and strengthening newcomer family engagement through community partnerships. Learn from a current practitioner how schools can streamline procedures, prioritize relationship-building, and create systems that better support MLLs/ELLs. We’ll also highlight structured parent engagement sessions that offer essential resources, advocacy tools, and opportunities to strengthen school-community connections. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies for optimizing intake procedures and developing culturally responsive outreach programs that amplify student and family voices.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- An understanding of federal and state regulations as they relate to special populations enrollment and identification
- Best practices to implement when enrolling and identifying MLLs/ELLs and students with disabilities
- Identify inefficiencies in MLL/ELL intake processes and implement effective solutions
- Design and lead newcomer parent engagement sessions with valuable resources and advocacy tools
- Develop culturally responsive practices that empower MLL/ELL families and support student success
