In recent years, New York State has embarked on a transformative journey to overhaul its literacy instruction, pivoting from the balanced literacy approach to the evidence-based principles of the Science of Reading. This shift is driven by a growing recognition of the critical role that proficient reading plays in a student’s academic success and overall life trajectory. We’re calling upon K-8 educators to join us for a hybrid series* on the Science of Reading that involves online course work in three between live synchronous sessions. In this partnership with SUNY New Paltz, you will join a cohort of educators with a shared mission of improving literacy outcomes for children across the U.S., by promoting research-backed knowledge and practices that are proven to help learners gain skills as readers. Upon completion of the course, participants will walk away with actionable next steps to make the Science of Reading come to life in their classrooms (whatever their content!) and will receive a Science of Reading microcredential and 1 graduate credit.
In this first live session, participants will convene to establish a shared understanding of the Science of Reading and become oriented to the course’s online modules.
Facilitator: SUNY New Paltz
*Note: We encourage schools to send one literacy lead and at least one teacher to attend this series together. Collaborative members will use ONE School Team Learning Cohorts (STLC) seat to attend this series.
