The Science of Reading (SOR) has gained significant attention in recent years but a key question remains: Does the Science of Reading work for multilingual children? In this session, we?ll examine what current research says about SOR and multilingual learners, explore important considerations for SOR-aligned instruction for MLLs/ELLs, and share practical, asset-based strategies that support biliteracy development. Throughout the session, we?ll center students? linguistic and cultural strengths as essential to effective reading instruction.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
– Describe current research on the Science of Reading as it relates to multilingual learners and how it differs from research on monolingual learners
– Implement effective, SOR-aligned reading instructional strategies for multilingual children
– Identify opportunities to plan asset-focused reading instruction that affirms students? linguistic and cultural identities and promotes biliteracy
