In this follow up Part 2 session*, you will learn how to plan lessons that intentionally teach both content and the academic language students need to access it with a WIDA lens. Using a backward planning approach, you will break down an upcoming lesson to identify the vocabulary, sentence structures, and discourse patterns students must understand and use to engage successfully with grade-level content.
Come to this session with a learning objective for an upcoming lesson and leave with a plan to teach both the language and content of that objective. You will leave with a completed or near-completed lesson plan that integrates explicit language instruction into your content objective, making language development a natural part of daily instruction.
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Identify the key features of academic language (vocabulary, sentence structures, and discourse)
- Use backward planning to design lessons that integrate language and content goals
- Embed explicit language instruction into grade-level content lessons
