MLL/ELL Leaders Summit: Teaching Content Area Language with the WIDA Framework (Day 2 – Humanities)

December 4 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

- $390

In this two-day Summit,* MLL/ELL leaders will learn what it means to strengthen language development across content areas (Science, Math, ELA, and Social Studies) in light of the state’s transition to WIDA. You will walk away with scaffolds, routines, and instructional tools that support multilingual learners at all proficiency levels while maintaining grade-level rigor.

On Day 2 of this Summit, you will focus on how to make grade-level social studies and language arts instruction more accessible for multilingual learners using the WIDA ELD Framework. You will explore the language demands embedded in humanities instruction and learn practical strategies to help students understand complex texts, engage in discussion, and clearly communicate their ideas using academic language. You will examine the language of informational and argumentative thinking and practice strategies for helping students comprehend complex texts, use academic vocabulary, and support claims with evidence. You will also explore how to support students in reading, analyzing, and responding to literary texts through narrative and argumentative language.

By the end of Day 2, you will be able to:

  • Identify academic language in literary and social studies texts, tasks, and assessments.
  • Design and develop scaffolds and supports so that students at different levels of language proficiency can comprehend grade-level texts and concepts in ELA and social studies
  • Implement WIDA ELD strategies to explicitly teach language learners to use vocabulary, sentence structures, and discourse markers in narrative, informational, and argumentative communication, discussions and writing.

Facilitator: Beth Skelton
