In this two-day Summit,* MLL/ELL leaders will learn what it means to strengthen language development across content areas (Science, Math, ELA, and Social Studies) in light of the state’s transition to WIDA. You will walk away with scaffolds, routines, and instructional tools that support multilingual learners at all proficiency levels while maintaining grade-level rigor.
On Day 1 of this Summit (12/3), you will specifically focus how to make grade-level STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) instruction more accessible for multilingual learners using the WIDA ELD Framework. You will explore the language demands embedded in STEM content and learn practical strategies to help students understand complex ideas and clearly explain their thinking using academic language. Throughout the day, you will focus on STEM instruction, examining the language of scientific and mathematical thinking and practicing strategies for helping students comprehend problems, use academic vocabulary, and communicate their reasoning with clarity. You will also explore how to support students in using language to describe, explain, and discuss scientific, technological, and engineering concepts and processes.
By the end of Day 1, you will be able to:
- Identify academic language in math problems and explanations and in science concepts and processes.
- Develop scaffolds and supports so that MLLs/ELLs at different levels of language proficiency can comprehend grade-level math and science concepts
- Implement strategies to explicitly teach language learners to use vocabulary, sentence structures, and discourse markers in mathematical and scientific inquiries and explanations.
