Being a MLL/ELL lead in an NYC charter school means getting the legal and programmatic foundations right and knowing exactly what to do when a new student walks through your door. This IN PERSON boot camp session covers the full landscape of MLL/ELL requirements and best practices: federal and state regulations, translation and interpretation, programming and services, and enrollment and identification procedures. You’ll also walk through how to administer and score the NYSITELL (the New York State’s Identification Test for English Language Learners), so you’re ready to begin assessing students from the first day of school.
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Identify federal and state legal mandates governing multilingual learner/English language learner supports in NYC charter schools
- Describe best practices for translation, interpretation, programming, enrollment and identification
- Apply procedures for administering and scoring the NYSITELL
- Connect legal requirements to practical next steps for your school’s program
