MLL/ELL Boot Camp 2024 (REPEAT)

September 12 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

- $390

In this full day, IN PERSON training, participants will learn the ins and outs of MLL/ELL education in charter schools. We will cover mandates and best practices when it comes to: federal and state regulations, translation and interpretation, enrollment, assessment, programming, and instruction. Participants will have ample opportunities to reflect on next step and connect with fellow new-to-charter MLL/ELL educators.

Agenda

9:00am-10:30am – MLL/ELL Enrollment/Identification & NYSITELL Administration

We will deep dive into national and local regulations and best practices associated with the MLL/ELL enrollment and identification process, including tips for NYSITELL administration and scoring. Participants will leave with concrete next steps for ensuring compliance with MLL/ELL laws and MLL/ELL identification procedures.

10:30am-12:00pm – MLL/ELL Programming & Core Instruction

You have identified your MLL/ELL students and their proficiency levels. Now what? This session will address compliance and best practices for MLL/ELL programming and provide many ideas for how to differentiate for MLLs/ELLs during core content instruction. Participants will explore high leverage research-based strategies that can be built into lesson plans, regardless of content area. Built-in work time will be provided for participants to consider where and when the differentiation strategies presented can be implemented into future lessons.

12:00pm-12:45pm – Lunch

12:45pm-2:00pm – MLL/ELL Assessment & NYSESLAT Administration

In this session, we will discuss the ins and outs of NYS assessments and MLL/ELL testing accommodations. Educators will also receive a high-level overview of the NYSESLAT and have time to unpack the NYSESLAT rubrics and performance level descriptions that can drive instruction throughout the year.

2:00pm-3:00pm – MLL/ELL Family Engagement & Advocacy

Empowering families to be active participants in their child’s education is vital to student success and there are special considerations to be made when engaging with MLL/ELL families. This session will review federal regulations around MLL/ELL family communication and give participants suggestions and ideas on how to engage and empower MLL/ELL families as partners in education using a culturally responsive-sustaining lens.
