In this full day of learning, we’ll explore common pitfalls in discipline approaches to students with disciplines and explore alternative approaches to better outcomes for students.
In the morning, you will focus on tuning behavior intervention plans (BIPs). BIPs are dynamic tools, and when well-conceived and executed, they can make a night and day difference for not only one student, but often an entire classroom. In instances where data reveals that a BIP is not yet meeting student needs, this session provides you a structured protocol for identifying common barriers to BIP effectiveness and upgrading existing plans using real student and observational data. You’ll leave with a revised plan ready to bring back to your school team.
In the afternoon, you will reflect on traditional disciplinary methods for students with disabilities and explore effective alternatives to suspension. You will learn evidence-based strategies that encourage positive behavior, maintain educational continuity, and meet legal standards. Attendees will gain practical, inclusive techniques for addressing behaviors, while supporting the unique needs of students with disabilities, promoting a more equitable and supportive school environment.
By the end of this day, you will be able to:
- Identify common barriers to effective behavior intervention and support plans
- Use current student and observational data to assess the effectiveness of an existing BIP
- Apply a tuning protocol to upgrade existing Behavior Intervention Plans for better student outcomes
- Learn alternatives to traditional disciplinary methods used in NYC schools.
- Acquire strategies that promote positive self-regulation, behavior, and relationships in schools.
- Implement practical methods to address classroom misconduct while attending to the diverse needs of students.
