Helping Newcomer MLL/ELL Students Achieve in Math

October 24 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

- $350

For newcomer MLLs/ELLs, the initial school experience can be daunting, presenting unique challenges for both students and teachers. Join California Teacher of the Year, Alex Kajitani, in this engaging session that explores the lived experiences of newcomer students and will equip participants with specific, implementable strategies to build meaningful relationships and ensure students’ success in math. Leave with real, high-leverage strategies that can be used the very next day!

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of the experiences, strengths, and struggles faced by newcomer students, fostering empathy and creating a supportive learning environment.
  • Transform math content into an engaging and fun(!) learning experience for newcomers, captivating their interest and promoting active participation.
  • Implement high-leverage strategies that encourage newcomer students to read, write, and speak in math class, enhancing their language proficiency while mastering mathematical concepts.
