Multilingual students bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our classrooms, including their home language(s)! It is our challenge as educators to honor all languages while we simultaneously develop English language proficiency. As a way to meet this challenge, in this session we will explore translanguaging and sheltered instruction, research-based approaches that support teachers in leveraging students’ home language to provide access to grade-level content and support English language acquisition.
More specifically, after this session, participants will be able to:
- Articulate the compelling reasons for embracing sheltering and translanguaging strategies, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
- Distinguish between sheltering instruction and translanguaging, understanding their similarities and differences in supporting multilingual learner comprehension.
- Develop a personalized action plan outlining four specific strategies you will implement to leverage home languages, creating a culturally responsive and linguistically affirming classroom experience.
