In this session, participants will learn how to transform traditional, one-way family outreach into meaningful, two-way partnerships that strengthen learning and belonging for multilingual learners and their families. Educators will explore the Dual Capacity Framework, practice empathy-based strategies, and apply research-aligned tools to redesign MLL/ELL engagement practices so they build both educator and family capacity. Through interactive activities and real examples, attendees will leave with practical approaches they can implement immediately.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Understand and articulate the difference between one-way outreach and two-way MLL/ELL family partnerships
- Apply empathy-based and culturally responsive strategies to strengthen educators’ capacity to engage multilingual families and build relational trust
- Redesign a current family engagement practice into a two-way, collaborative approach that supports both family and educator capacity and advances student learning
