Knowing whether a young student’s communication differences reflect typical development or a genuine impairment can be one of the trickiest calls early elementary teachers make. This session walks you through the signs of speech and language impairments in K–2 students, including early literacy impairments and the connection between language and literacy, for both monolingual and multilingual children. You’ll also review the referral process and the common pitfalls that can lead to misidentification.
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Identify signs of speech and language impairments in K-2 students
- Recognize early indicators of literacy impairments and their connection to language development
- Describe the referral process and common misidentification pitfalls for the early elementary population
