This workshop explores how grammar can be taught as a tool for meaning-making to enhance writing development at the middle and high school levels. It begins by examining the connection between grammar and writing instruction, drawing on second language acquisition research to present approaches that integrate form and meaning. In the interactive second half, participants will engage with examples and collaboratively design grammar activities that support writing development.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the relationship between grammar and writing
- Understand how grammar activities integrate a focus on form and meaning
- Apply theories and modeled examples to create effective grammar activities for writing
