Book Study: Academic Languaging (Part 2)

December 8 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am

- $350

If you are wondering what the latest research says about supporting students in mastering both academic language and content simultaneously, you’re not alone! Join fellow NYC charter educators for a book study of the professional text, Academic Languaging: Engaging Multilingual Students in Content Area Learning by Dr. Gisela Ernst-Slavit and Dr. Margo Gottlieb (Corwin, 2025). Through this three-part hybrid series,* we’ll unpack the book and explore how language development is something that happens through use: through discussion, negotiation, and meaning-making tied directly to content learning, with students taking an active role rather than absorbing language passively.

This study group is designed for MLL/ELL coordinators, school leaders, classroom teachers, and MLL/ELL teachers who want guided discussion and practical, classroom-ready strategies for teaching content and language, grounded in the book’s examples rather than a purely theoretical read. The book works through this approach subject by subject, examining how language demands differ across Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science, and offering classroom-tested ways to support multilingual learners’ growth within each discipline.

By the end of this virtual Part 2 session, you will be able to:

  • Expand your network of fellow educators seeking to strengthen language and content instruction for language learners
  • Build off of Part 1 and reflect further on the latest research on simultaneous academic language and content development
  • Prepare for Q&A with the co-author, Margo Gottlieb, on 1/20/27
  • Apply lessons learned to your individual context, including across multiple content areas

*Important note on attendance:

Collaborative members will use ONE Trainings/Workshops seat to attend the series. Registration indicates ability and commitment to attend all meeting times: 10/30/26 and 12/8/26. Participants in this series will also receive a FREE seat to our session with the co-author, Margo Gottlieb, on 1/20/27. Books will be presented in person at the book study launch on 10/30/26. Any registrant who misses the Book Study Launch on 10/30/26 will receive an invoice for the cost of the professional text and will be removed from the book study. We appreciate your dedication to the book study community by acknowledging and upholding the above professional guidelines before registering.
